Meet Our Coaches

STARR FOSTER

Starr is a co-founder of StarrMark Academy, which trains all levels of play and all ages from age 3 to college.

At the youthful age of 4, Starr Foster received her first tennis racquet from the great Arthur Ashe. Both her father, George Foster, the first MLB free agent and Arthur’s work ethics and influential engagement on and off the court, have served as a blue print for her coaching method and way of life. She is a Professional Tennis Registry certified coach in adult and junior development.

 

Prior to the pandemic, she instructed at Georgetown University for 10 years. In 2011, she was named assistant women's tennis coach at Georgetown University and then served as a coach for two seasons. Starr helped coach two Big East performers and in 2011-2012, the Georgetown women had its best season at a 16-6 record as well as a mark of 5-2 in the BIG EAST Conference. In addition, she serves on the USTA Junior Development Committee for the Mid Atlantic section. Starr focuses on development for both juniors and adults through producing high performance training, competitive match play experiences as well as mental and movement training. Starr’s private lessons are goal-oriented and focus on the individual’s strengths and areas for improvements.

Notables Achievements & Projects

  • In 2015, she served as one of the keynote speakers for the National Association for Commission for Women’s (NACW) 45th annual Conference and Empowerment Summit where she was awarded The Leadership Award by the state of Indiana Commission for women.

  • In 2016, Starr served as a member of USTA’s Girls Rule the Court Pilot Program in which female tennis professionals empower the next generation of coaches and players through local Play Days and weekly clinics. In 2017, she served on USTA’s Mid-Atlantic Tournament Committee Advisory Board and received USTA’s “Growth of the Game Teaching Professional” award, which is given to esteemed tennis coaches who consistently bring new ideas to engage their communities. In that same year, she played for a summer Dominican Republic Club team in doubles and brought them to the championship.

  • In 2020, Starr partnered with Amore Learning, a DC based educational learning program, which focuses on teaching Arthur Ashe’s life principles. Starr worked with Amore Learning to create a program for the Washington Jesuit Academy that focuses on learning tennis as well as serving the community through tennis.

  • When off the court, she produces and moderates radio sports shows for youth and professional athletes. She has also developed an organization called Queens of the Court, for girls’ empowerment and self-esteem.

MARK DALZELL

Mark Dalzell is a co-founder of StarrMark Academy. Coach Mark, as he is known to his students, is a passionate and experienced tennis professional with over 35 years of experience in coaching and instructing both adults and children. He is a well-trained, award-winning tennis champion dedicated to helping students develop their skills and reach their full potential. With a strong background in coaching. Coach Mark can effectively communicate with students and provide clear instructions.

 

Throughout his career, Coach Mark has held various leadership roles, including serving as the Director of Tennis at the Montgomery Sports Association and as Head Coach at DeMatha Catholic High School and Elizabeth Seton High School. He played NCAA II tennis for the College of Saint Rose and went on to work for tennis legends Arthur Ashe and Nick Bollettieri at Ashe-Bollettieri Cities. Coach Mark has a proven track record of successfully designing and managing tennis programs and has played a significant role in promoting tennis education and bringing the sport to new audiences.
